Diction for Singers is a phonetic approach to the pronunciation of the Italian and English languages and is designed for singers and choral directors. The performance of the language utilizes the vocal literature of major composers in each language.

Demonstrate an understanding of the purposes and uses of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
Demonstrate mastery of the most commonly used symbols of IPA for singing.
Apply IPA to common musical situations: solo singing, choral singing, and conducting.
Demonstrate mastery of the basic rules of Italian and English Diction.
Demonstrate mastery of using IPA to correctly pronounce Italian and English for singing.
Demonstrate mastery of using IPA to annotate a musical score.
Know and use active listening skills.
Use appropriate posture, gestures, eye contact, and vocal expressiveness to effectively communicate information.

Introduction to Purpose and Rules of IPA
Introduction to Vowels in English
- Categorization of Vowels, Diphtongs, Triphthongs
Introduction to Consonants in English
- plosives, fricatives, voiced vs. unvoiced, lateral, trilled, affricates, and other unique outliers
- discussion of dialects and Received Pronunciation
Application of IPA to English repertoire
Introduction to Vowels in Italian
- syllabification and stresses in Italian
- rules and exceptions for open and closed /o/ and /e/
- vowel change rules, diphthongs, glides, elisions
Introduction to Consonants in Italian
- rules and exceptions
Application of IPA to Italian repertoire
Final Projects in Italian
