Description
This course surveys major English Romantic and Victorian poets and prose writers, while also exploring modern trends and contemporary voices in British literature. Students will explore key authors, texts, and literary movements, analyzing how works reflect and shape Britain’s cultural, social, political, and religious contexts. Through close reading, discussion, and writing, students will interpret, evaluate, and critically assess texts within their historical and cultural frameworks.

1. Identify key authors, works, and literary movements from the Romantic Era through the present and explain their impact on British culture, politics, religion, and literature.

2. Construct and support interpretations of British texts using textual evidence and historical or cultural context, both in writing and discussion.

3. Analyze literary texts, such as poetry, drama, essays, and the novel, for style, theme, characterization, rhetoric, and genre, connecting them to Britain’s evolving social, cultural, and historical contexts.

4. Interpret written information accurately and assess its meaning, use, and potential bias.

5. Evaluate how literary works reflect or diverge from their periods and analyze them within historical, social, political, and economic contexts.

I. The Romantic Era

 A. Read and analyze a diverse body of published works from the Romantic era to discuss

1. Elements of craft and genre

2. Social, cultural, historical, political, and religious influences

B.  Compare published works of this and other era as a means of understanding commonalities and differences among ideas and perspectives in Great Britain across time

C.  Produce texts that interpret, analyze, or creatively represent the published works of the Romantic Era

II. The Victorian Era

A. Read and analyze a diverse body of published works from the Victorian era to discuss

1.  Elements of craft and genre

2. Social, cultural, historical, political, and religious influences

B.  Compare published works of this and other era as a means of understanding commonalities and differences among ideas and perspectives in Great Britain across time

C.  Produce texts that interpret, analyze, or creatively represent the published works of the Victorian era

III. The Twentieth Century through the present

A. Read and analyze a diverse body of published works from the Twentieth Century through the present and discuss

1.  Elements of craft and genre

2. Social, cultural, historical, political, and religious influences

B.  Compare published works of this and other era as a means of understanding commonalities and differences among ideas and perspectives in Great Britain across time

C.  Produce texts that interpret, analyze, or creatively represent the published works of the Twentieth Century through the present
