Description
This course focuses on building patient behavior modification techniques and increased proficiency in applying the dental hygiene process of care for patients. Students are introduced to advanced root instrumentation skills for nonsurgical periodontal therapy, providing a foundation for complicated periodontal cases. Continued application of self-assessment, personal goal setting, and problem solving strategies builds student proficiency in providing individualized comprehensive patient care.

1. Demonstrate the use of the dental hygiene diagnosis when providing care for all types of dental hygiene patients by appropriate documentation of the Dental Hygiene Patient Care Plan.

2. Discuss principles of advanced instrumentation techniques and identify potential treatment difficulties related to root anatomy.

3. Evaluate which advanced instrumentation techniques would be most appropriate for individual patients.

4. Explain the rationale and procedure for the application of slow-release antimicrobials.

5. Identify symptoms and theories of dentinal hypersensitivity and contrast these with symptoms of pulpal necrosis.

6. Identify clinical strengths, weaknesses, and patient management concerns through self-reflection and completion of goal re-evaluation.

7. Identify methods of patient behavior modification in accordance with a patient treatment plan.

8. Create and document a treatment plan for nonsurgical periodontal therapy and re-evaluation.

9. Apply the concepts of best practice for a periodontally involved patient treated in the clinic.

Faculty Credential Requirement Details:
Masters degree in Education or a related credential is preferred. A minimum of 2 years of related work experience (4,000 hours) is required to satisfy Perkin’s Vocational Act requirements. Additionally, the Instructor must possess a RDA/CDA, or RDH License or DDS/DMD License in Michigan. Documented expertise in the area of teaching responsibility and the area of content delivery method are required.
