This course is designed to examine the American correctional process with emphasis on correctional institutions and alternatives at the federal, state, county, and local level.

Course Learning Outcomes:
  1. Define the purpose and objectives of correctional institutions: Differentiate between security levels; prisoner classifications (as prescribed by the ACA); and note the difference between male and female facilities.
  2. Discuss the various forms of programming available in prisons such as: workforce development; academic and vocational trade programs; and medical and mental health programs.
  3. List and describe the various roles of management and the overall organization of correctional facilities at the local, county, state and federal level.
  4. Examine the human concerns related to custodial care including food service and clothing requirements.
  5. Compare and contrast the major concerns related to safety and security in correctional facilities at all levels: the courts; prisoner records; procedures for contraband; personal and property shakedowns; prisoner movement, the use of force; escape concerns; emergency control issues; transportation and housing units.
  6. Explain prisoner rights and pre-release programs available to inmates.
  7. Identify, assess, and explain the future concerns of incarceration in America.
  8. Consider the context, costs, benefits and consequences of potential solutions to problems or issues. 
  9. Use rules or frameworks to provide context for and understand problems or issues. 
  10. Identify ethical dilemmas associated with environmental, social or cultural issues. 
  11. Use reflection to examine personal beliefs and values and identify their origins and potential biases.
