Description
This course focuses on the role and responsibilities of an early childhood program director and on the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful as a director. Topics include:  teamwork, leadership, standards of quality, health and safety, relationships with families, budgeting, space, schedule and equipment, staff hiring and supervision, and professionalism.

Course Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will:

1. Understand the role and responsibilities of an early childhood program director.

2. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of teamwork in building necessary skills for success a a Program Director.

3. Recognize and apply professional standards a measure of program quality.

4. Compile a set of resources, procedures and strategies for program leadership and management.

5. Meet CDA training requirements in the following areas:  planning a safe, healthy environment that promotes learning, establishing productive relationships with families, effective program management and leadership that is responsive to participant needs and maintaining a commitment to professionalism.

6. Evaluate the ethical conduct in early childhood based on the  NAEYC code of ethical conduct.

7. Make effective presentation, formatting, and stylistic choices when developing a communication. 

8. Clearly and completely state and describe a problem/issue. 

9. Use rules or frameworks to provide context for and understand problems or issues. 

10. Identify ethical dilemmas associated with environmental, social or cultural issues. 

11. Understand the laws, regulations, institutional policies, and etiquette related to the access and use of information resources. 

12. Use reflection to examine personal beliefs and values and identify their origins and potential biases.

Faculty Credential Requirement Details: Masters Degree in Early Childhood or related field of study including course work related to management, leadership and supervision of early childhood programs.

Professional work experience as an Early Childhood Program leader.  Meeting Perkins Act work hour requirements.
