CTG 241 - Clinical Practice II Description This is the final clinical course in a series of two that provides the necessary supervised clinical education needed for the CT student to competently apply basic protocols, recognize when to appropriately alter the standard protocol, and recognize equipment and patient considerations that affect image quality. Emphasis will be placed on patient safety and comfort while professional values, attitudes, and behaviors are upheld. Employ proper precautions to prevent disease transmission. IV. Monitor linens and supplies and restock when necessary. V. Demonstrate the actions required if a patient requires sedation, contrast media, is claustrophobic, or has an allergic reaction. VI. Demonstrate an understanding of a patient’s cultural, ethical, or value system differences. VII. Speak with patients in a professional empathetic manner to alleviate any concerns patients may express. VIII. Demonstrate professional ethics by reserving the patient’s modesty. IX. Demonstrate how to give proper instructions to optimize patient comfort and cooperation. X. Adhere to national, organizational, and departmental standards, protocols, policies, and procedures regarding CT exams and patient care. XI. Ensure that professional performance and competence are reflected throughout the exam. XII. Consistently maintain patient confidentiality standards. XIII. Perform safe, ethical, and legal practices. XIV. Maintain a safe work environment for patients, visitors, and health care workers. XV. Properly prescreen patients for contraindications to CT contrast. XVI. Ensure patient safety by correlating surgical, accident, and occupational safety. XVII. Respond appropriately in emergency situations, e.g., crash cart use. XVIII. Use standard protocols to perform routine CT examinations XIX. Use Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) to archive and send images. XX. Identify when to modify a protocol and successfully perform the modification. XXI. Power up and shut down the system. XXII. Correlate the requested exam with clinical history and reported physical exam findings. XXIII. Demonstrate how to properly prepare a patient for the requested exam. XXIV. Ensure proper set up of equipment, table accessories, and cushioning. XXV. Critique images for appropriate clinical information, image quality, and patient information. XXVI. Demonstrate the appropriate corrective actions to improve inadequate image information. Mandatory Course Components: 75% of the course grade will be the ability to achieve successful competency of eight twelve (12) imaging exams. 15% of the course grade will result from the Student Performance Evaluation completed by the clinical instructor/coordinator and program director. 10% of the course grade will result from online discussions and personal reflection assignments. To encourage competency and facilitate professional growth, attendance is mandatory.
