Description
This course focuses on developing an understanding and sensitivity about cultural diversity when dealing with inmates and staff, and helps students develop skills to effectively communicate with inmates to neutralize aggressive encounters. Other topics include causes and levels of stress and the effects on the mind and body, as well as the personal and legal perspectives of sexual harassment.

Course Outline:
I. Cultural Diversity and Ethics (8 hours)

This module is designed to develop understanding and sensitivity about cultural diversity when dealing with inmates and staff. Origins of cultural traditions are examined, as well as methods for dealing with unique ethnic, racial and religious distinctions.

II. Interpersonal Communications (8 hours)

This module will focus on developing the skills to effectively communicate with inmates and neutralize aggressive encounters. This National Institute of Corrections (NIC) course is designed to sharpen verbal and non-verbal communication with inmates and colleagues. The module utilizes a combination of text and video scenarios to demonstrate various skills and includes role playing exercises.

III. Stress Management (8 hours)

This module examines the causes and levels of stress and the effects of stress on the mind and body. The module also explains and demonstrates effective methods of stress reduction.

A. Identify cause and effects of stress.

B. Identify behavioral symptoms of stress.

C. Identify positive and negative coping strategies.

D. Identify and practice stress-mitigating responses to work related situations. 

IV. Professionalism and Coworker Communication (2 hours)

This module was designed to help participants better understand their role in a Local Sheriff’s Office and how to conduct themselves appropriately as a Local Corrections Officer in a jail setting.

A.  Understand basic para-military structure and common definitions

B.  Understand appearance and conduct

C.  Discuss the fundamental rules of co-worker communication
 

V. Prison Rape Elimination Act (4 hours)

This module was designed by the Moss Group and the PREA Resource Center to be interactive through small group activities and large group discussions.

A. Understand the Zero-Tolerance policy

B. Discuss tools for preventing, detecting, reporting, and responding to sexual abuse and sexual harassment.

18 graduate credit hours in discipline being taught (HLC Requirement), Master’s Degree (GRCC general requirement), Professionally qualified through work experience in field (Perkins Act or Other) (list below)
Faculty Credential Requirement Details: Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice or related field is preferred. Instructors must be approved by the Michigan Sheriff’s Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTC) and are either currently working in, or have worked in a jail setting within the last 2 years, in accordance with the MSCTC standards.  Additionally, a minimum of 2 years of related work experience (4,000 hours) is required to satisfy Perkin’s Vocational Act requirements.
