MUS 114 - Music Theory II


Description
This course covers harmonic analysis of the common practice period through the development of part-writing in a four-voice chorale texture, harmonization of tonal melodies, 1st and 2nd species counterpoint, and analysis of tonal music. Students learn to harmonize melodies and develop chord progressions consistent with tonal harmony using diatonic triads, seventh chords, secondary dominant function chords, and modulation. An introduction to binary and ternary form is also included.

1. Compose 2 and 3 voice first and second species counterpoint following species counterpoint guidelines.

2. Demonstrate guidelines for voice leading in a four-voice diatonic texture using triads in all position. 

3. Compose a soprano line for a given bass line within a four-voice texture.

4. Harmonize a tonal melody.

5. Write and recognize chord progressions within varying textures found in music of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.

6. Recognize sections in music, cadence types, phrases, and various phrase groupings including period structures.

7. Distinguish between and identify chord tones and non-chord tones in multiple textures from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.

8. Demonstrate an understanding of tonal progression and harmonic rhythm through analysis and composition. 

9. Demonstrate the structure and function of all 7th chords (dominant 7ths, leading tone 7ths, non-dominant 7ths, and secondary function chords). 

10. Demonstrate an understanding of modulation (common chord, chromatic and phrase) through analysis of music from the Baroque Classical and Romantic periods.

11. Demonstrate an understanding of simple binary and ternary forms through analysis of music, focusing on music from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.

V. Review of cadences, phrases, periods, and non-chord tones

VI. Voice leading for the dominant seventh chord
