Corequisites: None Description: This course is a study of African-American literature from colonial America through the 20th century. Students review the historical backdrop against which the literary landscape was created and read a variety of genres (slave narratives, fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction). In order for students to understand the multiple influences on and within African-American literary expression of colonial American to the 1940s (20th century), works are analyzed within the context of the political, economic, and social perspectives of the United States.
