MUS 118 - Jazz Arranging Credits: 2 Contact Hours: 2 Prerequisites: MUS 117 (C or Higher) and MUS 122 (C or Higher)

College Level Prerequisites: None Description: MUS 118 is a study of the art of arranging for jazz combos. Students will learn the ranges, transpositions, and sound potential of all saxophones (plus common woodwind doubles), trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, and drums. The skills taught in the class include writing effective jazz rhythms in all jazz styles, standard harmonizing techniques, common scoring practices, and contemporary trends within the medium. There will be a written final on arranging techniques, and a final project requiring a written arrangement for five horns and four rhythm section members. All assignments and projects must be prepared using Finale Music Composition Software.
