Geography is devoted to an exploration of the earth, and geographers examine the natural environments and cultural landscapes that characterize places. In essence, geographers seek to understand “the why of where.” By employing a global perspective, while also possessing and applying knowledge of how people and the environment are linked together, geographers conduct the sound analysis that is critical for solving problems facing both nature and society.

Geographers work in sustainable development, foreign affairs, environmental conservation, natural hazards analysis, water resources policy, global climate change assessment, humanitarian relief, cultural resources management, military intelligence, journalism, historic preservation, urban and regional planning, and many other fields that require a holistic perspective derived from studying the social and natural sciences. Students that graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Geography are ready to embark on rewarding careers, and by declaring this Pre-Major, students are on track to graduate with an Associate of Arts degree from GRCC and transfer to a 4-year college or university to major in Geography.
